Did You Know ordinary eye tests might not always reveal what’s beneath the surface?

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is revolutionising the way we understand and monitor eye health. So we spoke to Shane Higgins, Senior Therapeutic Optometrist here at Kingsbridge Opticians who answers some key questions on OCT. Keep scrolling to find out more!

What is OCT?

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive imaging technique that generates high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the eye, primarily focusing on the retina (the tissue at the back of the inside of the eye, which is often likened to the film in a camera). OCT can also be used to assess other structures such as cornea and iris.

How Does It Work?

OCT uses infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. During the procedure, this light is projected onto the eye, and the OCT machine captures the reflected light. By comparing the projected light with the returned signals, the system computes the differences to create detailed images of the eye’s internal structures. This technology allows for real-time imaging, providing insights into the eye’s anatomy with remarkable clarity.

Why are OCT scans important?

The retina is a delicate tissue that plays a critical role in vision and is vulnerable to various forms of damage, including trauma, disease, and age-related changes. Maintaining the structural integrity of the retina is essential for clear vision. OCT enables eye care professionals to image and monitor the retina in fine detail, ensuring that any potential issues are detected early and effectively managed. This proactive approach helps preserve vision and enhance the overall quality of life for patients.

Does It Hurt?

One of the most appealing aspects of OCT is that the process is painless and straightforward. Because the machine employs infrared light which is imperceptible to the human eye, patients experience no discomfort or harsh flashes of light. Instead, they simply focus on a small flashing light, allowing for normal blinking while rapid scans are taken. The entire process typically lasts just a minute or two per eye.

Who would benefit from an OCT scan?

OCT scans can be invaluable for a wide range of individuals, even those without symptoms can benefit from OCT as part of comprehensive eye exams, ensuring early detection of potential issues.

Here are some groups that can significantly benefit from OCT imaging:

  1. Patients with Vision Problems: Individuals experiencing unexplained vision changes, such as blurred vision, dark spots, or distortion, can benefit from an OCT scan to identify underlying issues.
  2. Diabetic Patients: Those with diabetes are at higher risk for diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can lead to vision loss. Regular OCT scans help monitor the retina for early signs of damage.
  3. Glaucoma Patients: OCT is crucial for monitoring the optic nerve and assessing the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer, helping detect glaucoma progression and guide treatment.
  4. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Patients: OCT scans are essential for diagnosing and monitoring AMD, allowing for timely interventions that can slow disease progression.
  5. Individuals with a Family History of Eye Diseases: Those with a family history of conditions like glaucoma, AMD, or high myopia should consider regular OCT scans for early detection.
  6. Post-Surgical Patients: Individuals who have undergone eye surgery (e.g., cataract or retinal surgery) can benefit from OCT to monitor healing and detect any complications.
  7. Athletes and Active Individuals: People involved in sports may experience eye trauma. An OCT scan can assess any injuries and ensure proper recovery.
  8. Elderly Patients: Older adults are more susceptible to various eye diseases. Regular OCT scans can help in early detection and management of age-related changes.
  9. Patients with Systemic Diseases: Conditions such as hypertension or autoimmune diseases can affect eye health. OCT can provide insights into related eye complications.
