The cold Autumn air and low lying sun can bring about challenges when it comes to eye health. In this blog, we spoke to Shane Higgins, Senior Therapeutic Optometrist at Kingsbridge Opticians who offers some advice on how to keep your eyes safe and healthy this Autumn.

  • Wear Sunglasses: Whilst the Autumn days may be shorted and the sun less intense, the Autumn sun can still be harmful to your eyes. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection can shield your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays and reduce the risk of developing cataracts and other eye conditions. The low lying sun can also become dangerous when driving so investing in a good pair of sunglasses is key.
  • Dry Eyes: As the air becomes drier and colder outside and we begin to use central heating at home and hot air fans in the car, many people experience dry eyes. To alleviate this, remember to direct hot fans away from your face in your car and use lubricating eye drops regularly or consider investing in a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home. Remember to blink regularly, especially when spending extended periods of time in front of a screen.

There are many factors in relation to dry eye assessment and its treatment. The underlying causes, environmental factors and degrees of severity are extremely wide and varied. Every patient is different and treatment may need to be tailored specifically to the unique circumstances of the individual. If you struggle with dry, red, irritated, itchy or watery eyes, intermittently or chronically, don’t suffer needlessly, book to see your optometrist.

  • Stay hydrated: Maintaining good hydration levels not only benefits your overall health but also helps to prevent dry eyes. Make it a habit to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day.
  • Maintain Proper Eye Hygiene: Autumn can also bring an increase in allergens such as pollen and mould spores. To reduce the risk of eye irritation and infections, wash your hands regularly, refrain from rubbing your eyes and keep your living spaces clean. Additionally, if you wear contact lenses, ensure that you follow proper hygiene practices and avoid wearing them in dusty or smoky environments.
  • Regular Checkups: Regular eye tests and checkups are crucial for maintaining good eye health. Schedule an appointment with an optometrist to assess your vision and address any concerns you may have. Early detection and timely treatment of eye-related issues can prevent more serious complication later on.
