Kingsbridge Opticians would like to welcome Lisa McCormick, Optical Assistant to the team. To find out a bit more about Lisa we have complied a fun Q&A.

Lisa McCormick

1.Give us a brief outline of your career to date?

I worked in admin after leaving school for 9 years and from there I went on to work at a national optician’s chain. I then moved to a position at an independent optician where I spent the next 20 years. I heard the position with Kingsbridge Opticians and Hearing Care being advertised on the radio and I decided to apply – I hope to be here for the next 20 years!

2. What was your favourite subject at school?

My favourite subject was Art!

3.Did you go on to further/higher education, if so, where did you study and where?

No, but I did do some evening classes in desktop publishing and English.

4.How did you get into your area of work?

I wanted a change from office work and began working as an optical assistant in a national optician’s chain.

5. Is this what you always wanted to do?

I always thought about being an Air Hostess, but I couldn’t turn down the opportunity of office work and have never looked back.

6. What does a typical day entail?

Every day is so different, depending on what clinics are running. My responsibilities include welcoming both optical and hearing care patients upon their arrival as well as answering phone calls regarding queries and appointments. As an optical assistant, I work alongside the optician with the handover of patients after an eye examination, assisting them in selecting glasses and advising on contact lenses. Throughout the day I prepare glasses for collection, ensure they are fitted correctly, and that the customer has had a great experience.

7. What are the best and most challenging aspects of the job?

The best aspect of the job is helping patients through their customer journey and seeing them leaving the store happy with stylish and modern frames! The most challenging aspect is trying not to buy all of the beautiful frames for myself!

8. What advice would you give anyone looking to follow a similar career path?

I would advise them to go for it. It is so rewarding and there is great satisfaction in seeing patients leave after having a great experience at both Kingsbridge Opticians and at Kingsbridge Hearing Care.

9. If you weren’t doing this, what would you like to do?

I can’t imagine doing anything else!

10. What is one piece of advice you would give yourself on your first day?

I would tell myself in three months’ time it will feel as if I have always been here.

11. Describe your ideal day off?

A nice dry day to enjoy a walk on the beach with the dog and stop off for some lunch or dinner.
