It is common knowledge that our eyesight gets worse as we age, so Kingsbridge Opticians have put together the 4 main eye related issues that we should watch out for.

1. Cataracts

As you get older, the lens in your eye can gradually become less transparent which can result in blurred vision. This is known medically as having a cataract. Cataracts usually develop over a long period, causing your eyesight to gradually get worse over time. If left untreated, the lens will eventually become so clouded that it is impossible for you to see any detail and your vision will therefore become seriously affected.

2. Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common eye condition which starts when there is an increase of pressure within the eye. This pressure starts when the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain and becomes damaged. This can lead to loss of vision if it is not diagnosed and treated early.

Glaucoma can be particularly hazardous as often there are no initial symptoms until the disease progresses.

3. Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula within your eye. The macula is a component on your retina which directly affects central vision. Initial symptoms include blurred or distorted vision in one or both eyes. If it gets worse, you might struggle to see anything in the middle of your vision.

AMD can be found during a routine eye test before you experience any symptoms which is why regular eye exams are so important. If you are over 50, it is recommended to get an eye exam every year.

4. Dry Eye Syndrome

Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid conditions and certain medications we take can affect the health of the eyes. It is important to have regular eye tests to help manage these conditions and make sure the eyes are healthy.

If you have a problem with your eyes, early diagnosis and treatment may help to stop your vision getting worse.
